Artist Interview-2 Yu, Cheng-ta
http://www.yuchengta.com/

26th. March. 2010

The second artist that the Field Project interviewed is the student artist, Cheng-ta Yu. Though pretty young, he already participated in 2008 Taipei Biennial and 2009 Venice Biennale Taiwan Pavilion. In the interview we will try to focus on if the special experience brought any change on mind or work to the young artist.

Short excerpt:

Q: For young artist like you, to be able to participate in Taipei Biennial and Venice Biennale is very rare case. Did those big shows brought you any change on thinking?

A: I’ve been asked the same questions for so many times. Well, of course I feel really very lucky. The two curators of 2008 Taipei Biennial just came to our school, they also went to Taiwan University of the Arts and Tainan National University of the Arts. They took a look of our works and then finally they decided to call me. Maybe my work happens to be able to explain their ideas. For me the daily life didn’t change too much. But I have the chance to face more people, such as people from the Taipei Fine Art Museum, people from the Press and so on. I worked with people from TFAM in Venice, too.

Q: Last year when I went to Venice Biennale, since I already knew that I am coming to Taiwan, I dropped by Taiwan Pavilion intentionally. I also remember your work. For me, the show is pretty much like a document show. To be honest, my impression to the Taiwan Pavilion has totally changed after I came to Taiwan.

A: I think for every national pavilion in Venice, they are trying to show people what people think they should be. I think everyone would have some imaginary or stereotype of another country. When I travel to other country I also have the thinking of what it should be like. Since many countries are trying to fit into the imaginations others has made, that’s why there’s always big difference between the national pavilion and the nation’s real condition.

In the interview, we also share our different points of views of Venice Biennale. Different countries have different operations towards this kind of big events. Glory as it is, there’re still many things we haven’t known yet about Venice Biennale. It was a very interesting interview. We will keep updating more video and interviews. Please keep close with us!

26th. March. 2010
